May Bursts Into Bloom!

Of all the months of the year in the garden, May is the most vibrant. Every day, new flowers burst into bloom. I can barely keep up. If I miss even one day of garden inspection, I might not see that one special bloom.
It's not just that all the perennials pop up in May, but other garden excitement is going on too. Well, I suppose the word "excitement" would only apply to garden nuts who get all worked up about flowers blooming. May means starting the vegetable garden, filling up the containers and window boxes, putting out my water garden full of fish, planting flower seeds, filling in the empty spaces left by winter, and the myriad tasks that need to be done.
To say it's a busy time of year would be an understatement. In addition to all of the garden chores, there are graduations, first communions, concerts, recitals, and so many other activities. It can get a bit stressful.

Luckily, the garden chores are actually relaxing to me. Yes, it can be physically taxing. But isn't it worth it?

I must admit that I'm not fond of the garden hose rodeo that I have to perform every day once the plants and seeds go in. It only takes a couple of weeks of daily watering till the plants "grab hold", and then I can ease off dragging that crazy hose around my yard. I've tried purchasing a lighter hose, and it does help a bit. But I still have to keep it from smashing all the plants, wrestle it around corners, wind the thing up and down, try to keep from it getting caught on something, hoping it doesn't kink, you name it! Is it any wonder that I pray for rain?
Despite the stresses involved, May is a beloved month to me, as it is to many gardeners here in the north. I do have a birthday in May, that makes it extra special! But mostly, it's about the flowers. I've waited all winter for them to show up, and I plan to enjoy each and every one.
If you need me, I'll be out wrestling with the hose. Again. And loving every minute of it. May only comes once a year, and I don't want to miss it.

  1. I know about wrangling hose, but well worth it for your garden is lovely. Most everything here is late because it has been so cold and wet. Odd for Colorado. The iris are slow and the peonies have yet to bloom. Tons of buds. We lost our burning bushes in front of the house over the winter. Love your last photo. Wow. Have a great week end.

  3. Happy Birthday! May has to be one of my favorite months. It is all so glorious, even though I am also very familiar with the garden hose rodeo. I love your mosaic turtle, and your peonies! Great photo of the ant.

  7. Robin girl ... I swear i thought I came here and commented .. I looked at the date of this post and wondered if you were ok ? .. not posting since then ? .. I know I have long breaks between postings when it is this busy too though.
You have many more actual blooms in this month than we do here .. the plants are just getting on their feet and growing strong.
It was because of you and your amazing pictures of Angelina sedum that I got one too ! .. I remember the colours in Autumn that you caught with your camera and they were stunning .. now that I have one ... I might try to find another .. you can't just seem to have one of a special plant .. we need backups right ? LOL
    Joy : )

    1. I'm fine, just busy, as you suspected. May is just crazy around here. I sing with various choirs and groups, and May is concert month, not to mention all the gardening. Life slows way down once June comes.

  9. Hi Robin. You garden always looks so lovely. This May, here, there has been no hose dragging because we have had so much rain. A lot of rain. Too much rain. Who'd ever think that we would be saying that in Coloraodo. We also had a hard freeze Mother's Day night or the night before, wiping out so many buds, like the iris. They were just about ready to busst open, so yes, their show this was a bit disappointing. But the suh shines this morning. Maybe a thunderstorm later in the day. Enljoy your day.

  10. Oh my goodness can I ever relate to the garden hose wrangling...lol. Too many corners, too many plants, not enough hose...it's very difficult to water without squishing everything.

May is a beautiful month, I so agree.

    1. The garden hose wrangling is my own fault, I insist on planting new things that need a little support to start. And of course I throw seeds everywhere, and they have to be kept moist.
